PRINTMAKING Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts School of Art and Design

The printmaking program in the School of Art and Design at Syracuse University offers students the opportunity for concentrated study through studio work in relief, intaglio, lithography, silkscreen, letterpress printing, hand papermaking and book arts. Well equipped and thoroughly ventilated print studios, which include individual work spaces for graduate printmaking majors, a papermaking workshop, and a resource lab are maintained in the Comstock Art Facility, located a short distance from the main campus. ComArt, as the building is otherwise known, has been designed for optimal use of space and light, as well as to facilitate lively interaction among undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty and visiting artists. Printmaking, sculpture, metalsmithing, fiber arts, ceramics and a fully equipped woodshop and plastics lab share the ComArt facility and are part of the Department of Studio Arts. Students admitted to the School of Art and Design are encouraged to be active participants in a community of artists and to make the most of the diverse opportunities provided by the University as a whole.

Major Studio Space 6,400 Sq. ft. (including 800 sq. ft. graduate studio) Printmaking Studio Equipment Relief Three proof presses (15" x 30"), One Challenge proof press (15" x 30") and one poster press (24" x 27"). Intaglio A Takach Press (42" x 70"), a Charles Brand Press (36" x 56"), and a Hughes and Kimber press (22" x 36"). Separate ventilated acid-bath room, 36" x 42" Douthitt vacuum table with overhead exposure unit,  Electroetch system for non-acid etching. Lithography A Charles Brand Press (30" x 50"), a Conrad Press (27" x 38") and a Wepplo Press (29" x 38"). Large selection of assorted sized stones and separate stone-graining room. Olec Light Integrator for positive and negative photo sensitive plate making. Silkscreen Complete waterbase photo silkscreen facility and darkroom. 36" x 48" Douthitt vacuum exposure table, back lit washout sink and 12 printing stations. Letterpress (GOUDY Type Lab) Vandercook SP 15 proofing press and a large assortment of metal type with many original GOUDY fonts. Hand Papermaking Voight Hollander Beater, 1 1/2 lb., Commercial blender, (1 gallon capacity), pattern pistol, portable Hilger vacuum table/moulding (4' x 4'), 36 x 27" hydraulic paper press, five 12" x 15 " book presses and a variety of student and professional moulds.
