Sculpture
The sculpture program is focused on three-dimensional experimentation with form and idea, material and technique. In our bachelor of fine arts (B.F.A.) degree program, students are encouraged to cross boundaries as they explore concept, form, and space. Opportunities are available for working in all media—from the traditional to the contemporary and beyond.
Students receive thorough instruction in such divergent processes as figure modeling and installation art while being grounded in a thorough education of sculpture’s history, practice, and theory.
The spacious facilities provide dedicated workshops for such processes as metal casting, fabrication, and welding; wood and stone carving; clay; plaster; resins; and plastics, along with a state-of-the-art woodworking shop. With ample workspaces for assembly, project spaces for three-dimensional experimentation, gallery spaces for student exhibitions, outdoor casting and large-scale fabrication capabilities, and semi-private studio spaces for undergraduates, the facilities in the sculpture program fulfill its mission as a physical and intellectual space for exploring the experimental potentials of the sculpture practice.
The School of Art and Design feels that drawing plays a vital and primary role in the creative life of an artist.
