Setnor School of Music

The Setnor School of Music offers the creative, inquisitive student an extraordinary range of options for undergraduate study. Students at the Setnor School work intensively in one of four bachelor of music degree majors (composition, music education, music industry or performance), the bachelor of arts degree in music program, or the new Bandier Program for Music and the Entertainment Industries, which leads to a bachelor of science degree. Setnor students simultaneously experience all the larger University has to offer, taking courses and completing minors and, in many cases, second majors outside of music.

The Setnor School offers:

  • Classical training with an inquisitive, open approach to world and popular styles
  • Close, supportive relationships with active, professional faculty, some of whom are members of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra
  • A weekly convocation that provides a forum for music students and faculty to convene as a community of artists
  • Facilities that include practice rooms, computer and digital synthesis labs, an electronic music studio, a music education resource center, and the acoustically rich, 700-seat Setnor Auditorium, which houses a Holtkamp Organ and is the setting for approximately 175 concerts and recitals each year, many of which are streamed live (audio and video) over the Internet
  • A wide variety of performance opportunities [PDF] with the school's many ensembles, including the SU Symphony Orchestra, Oratorio Society, Women's Choir, Schiff Jazz Ensemble, University Singers, Opera Workshop, the Pride of the Orange Marching Band, Brazilian Music Ensemble, and contemporary music ensembles
  • A lively and diverse schedule of visiting artists and guest lecturers
  • Study abroad opportunities in Strasbourg, France; London, England; and other countries

Our students are successful because they are curious, self-motivated, and driven to become whole people, practitioners of an art nourished by the rich diversity of human experience.
